Columbus, Georgia is also known as "The Lowell of the South". Columbus is located in the western central part of Georgia in Muscogee County. Columbus is surrounded by: Smiths Station, Opelika, Auburn and Dadeville to the northwest; LaGarange, Hogansville and Franklin to the north; Manchester, Thomason and Barnesville to the northeast; Butler, Fort Valley and Perry to the east; Americus, Preston and Montezuma to the southeast; Richland, Lumpkin and Cuthbert to the south; Viillula, Hurtsboro and Union Springs to the southwest; and Phenix City, Tuskegee and Montgomery to the west. Major roads serving Columbus include: Georgia State Route 1, Georgia State Route 22, Georgia State Route 411, Georgia State Route 8, Georgia State Route 85, US Route 27, US Route 280, US Route 431 and Interstate Highway 185.

Columbus Metropolitan Airport (CSG) is small publicly owned airport. The airport can be reached after a thirteen minutes drive from Columbus. Only Delta Connection serves Columbus Metropolitan with direct flights to Atlanta.

Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM) also known as "Dannelly Field" is located about one-hour and forty-five minutes away from downtown Columbus. Some of the carrier airlines in the Montgomery Regional Airport would be Delta Connection, NWA Airlink, US Airways, Continental Express and Dayjet.

National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus is home to equipment, weapons, uniforms and military vessels used by the Confederate and Union navies in the American Civil War. The National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus is the United States only museum, which unfolds the story of the two navies in the Civil War.
