Indianapolis, the capital of Indiana, is the Racing Capital of the World, famous for hosting the Indianapolis 500 and the Allstate 400 every year. Indianpolis is located between Interstate 69, Interstate 70 and Interstate 65.
Indianapolis has a humid continental climate. Like most cities in the Midwest, it has four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid. Spring and autumn are usually pleasant. Winters are cool to cold with daily highs barely inching above freezing. It is not uncommon for Indianapolis to have snow in the winter.
Indianapolis International Airport (IND), is the largest airport in Indiana and serves the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area. In addition to a recently completed air traffic control tower, the airport is currently undertaking the building of two large oncourses, a new airfield and two new parking garages. The new terminal is being built with the intent of easing passenger access, and is being constructed between the two existing runways. The old terminal will be demolished after the new terminal opens. The current project is slated for completion in late 2008. The Indianapolis 500-Mile Race, often shortened to Indianapolis 500 or Indy 500, and historically known simply as "The 500," is an American automobile race, held annually over the Memorial Day weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana. The event, billed as "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing", is one of the oldest motorsport events, and is considered one of the three most significant motor racing events in the world. IMS also hosts the NASCAR Allstate 400 at the Brickyard (originally the "Brickyard 400") which is an extremely high attended event.
The Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix is a motorcycling event that will be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway . Its first edition will take place on September 14, 2008.
Indianapolis is home to the largest mini-marathon (and eighth-largest running event) in America. The Mini has been sold out every year, with well over 35,000 runners participating.
Every May Indianapolis holds the 500 Festival, a month of events culminating in the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade the day before the running of the Indianapolis 500. Indianapolis is also home to the Indiana State Fair as well as the Heartland Film Festival, the Indianapolis International Film Festival, the Indianapolis Theatre Fringe Festival, the Indianapolis Alternative Media Festival, the Midwest Music Summit and the Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival
Brickyard Crossing Golf Club is a four-and-half-star caliber Indianapolis golf course and is built on the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, hence the moniker. Green fees are steep, but how often to get to tee off with Indy cars flying past the tee at 270 mph?
