Iowa City is located in the eastern part of Iowa in Johnson County. Major roads serving Iowa City include: Iowa State Route 1, Iowa State Route 27, Iowa State Route 6, Iowa State Route 921, Iowa State Route 965, US Route 218, US Route 6, Interstate Highway 80 and Interstate Highway 380.

Iowa City Municipal Airport (IOW) is a small public airport located four minutes from Iowa City. The airport is the second busiest general aviation airport in Iowa.

The Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) is a mid-sized airport owned by the city of Cedar Rapids. The airport is thirty minutes from Iowa City. The Eastern Iowa Airport is served by American Airlines, American Connection, Northwest Airlines, Northwest Airlink, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, American Eagle, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connections, Northwest Airlink, United Airlines and United Express.

Quad City International Airport (MLI) is an international airport located in northern central Illinois. The airport can be reached after a one-hour drive from Iowa City. Quad City International is served by American Eagle, Delta Connection, Northwest Airlink, AirTran Airways and United Express.

Iowa City is home to the University of Iowa, a university offering students professional, graduate and undergraduate degrees. The University of Iowa offers several colleges, including: College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Tippie College of Business, College of Engineering, College of Pharmacy, College of Education, College of Nursing, Graduate College, College of Law, Carver College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Public Health and School of Journalism and Mass Communication. University of Iowa offers the Program in Creative Writing (Iowa Writer's Workshop) which is creative writing programs the allows students to obtain a Master of Fine Arts in English and its was the first programs in the United States to provide this degree. Iowa Hawkeyes is the name given University of Iowa's athletic teams, including football, wrestling, men's basketball, and women's basketball among others. Because of Iowa City's rich literature influence and background the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization selected Iowa City as the world's third City of Literature in November 2008. The Iowa Avenue Literary Walk has several bronze panels set on the concrete sidewalk with quotations of books and writing of 49 authors and playwrights.

Hancher Auditorium and the Iowa City Englert Theatre offer various dance shows, musicals, touring theaters, festivals and cultural events.
