Lawrence, Massachusetts

Lawrence is located in the northeastern part of Massachusetts in Essex County. Lawrence is surrounded by: Methuen, Derry, Manchester and South Bow to the northwest; Salem, Atkinson, East Hampstead and Danville to the north; Bardford, Haverhill, Groveland and Newburyport to the northeast; North Andover, West Boxford, Gorgetown and Rooty Plain to the east; Middleton, Hathorne, Danvers and Beverly to the southeast; Andover, Wilmington, Woburn and Winchester to the south; Lowell, North Chelmsford, Chelmsford and Tewksbury to the southwest; and Darcut, Tyngsboro, Dunstable and Pepperell to the west. Major roads serving Lawrence include: Massachusetts State Route 110, Massachusetts State Route 113, Massachusetts State Route 114, Massachusetts State Route 125, Massachusetts State Route 133, Massachusetts State Route 213, Massachusetts State Route 28, Interstate Highway 93 and Interstate Highway 495.

Lawrence Municipal Airport (LWM) is a small public airport owned by the City of Lawrence. Currently the airport only serves general aviation and charter flights. The airport can be reached after a twelve minutes drive from Lawrence.

Nashua Municipal Airport (ASH) is a small public airport; most of the airports traffic derives from general aviation. The airport can be reached by car after a thirty-seven minutes drive.

Beverly Municipal Airport (BVY) is a small public airport owned and operated by the City of Beverly. The majority of the airport's traffic comes from general aviation and there are currently no passenger airlines providing services to this airport. Beverly Municipal Airport can be reached after a forty minutes drive from Lawrence.

Logan International Airport (BOS) is the busiest airport in the State of Massachusetts. The airport is served by many different airlines including: Continental Airlines, Continental Express, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, Delta Shuttle, Northwest Airlink, American Airlines, American Eagle, Spirit Airlines, Virgin America, Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz, Alaska Airlines, US Airways, US Airways Express and US Airways Shuttle. Logan International is located thirty-five minutes from Lawrence.

Hanscom Field (BED) is a mid-sized publically owned airport. The airport can be reached by car after a thirty-four minutes drive from downtown Lawrence. The airport's only commercial airline is Linear Air providing direct service to Nantucket.

Greater Lawrence Community Boating Program, Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority and MBTA Haverhill/Reading Line transit systems offer residents and visitors reliable, comfortable, quick and affordable transportation within and outside the city of Lawrence.

Lawrence Heritage State Park is the perfect place to visit in order to learn about Lawrence's rich history, industry and culture. The Lawrence Heritage State Park helps visitors visualize how everything was back then with several exhibits, a video presentation, and other activities. The Lawrence Heritage State Park is divided in three areas including the Visitor's Center, Penberton Park and Lawrence Riverfront State Park. The Pemberton Park offers visitors the opportunity to fish, boat and view the city's mill and historic dam. The Lawrence Riverfront Park is home to woodened walking trails, basketball, tennis courts and street hockey courts, and much more. Other recreation opportunities offered in the Lawrence Heritage State Park include: biking, canoeing, boating, fishing, picnicking, walking and scenic viewing.

Another place to learn about Lawrence's rich history is the Lawrence History Center. The Lawrence History Center is home various historic maps of Lawrence, Lawrence postcards, World War II exhibit, Black History exhibit, Jewish exhibit, Education exhibit, and many educational programs. Other important historic sites that help reveal Lawrence's history are: Bellevue Cemetery (historic cemetery from 1847), Great Stone Dam (historic dam) and Lawrence Experiment Station (world's first trial station for drinking water purification and sewage treatment).
