Sioux City is located in the western part of Iowa in Woodbury and Plymouth County. Sioux City is surrounded by: North Sioux City, Jefferson, Elk Point and Junction City to the northwest; James, Adaville, Ruble and McNally to the north; Hinton, Neptune, Union Center and Fielding to the northeast; Lawton, Moville, Correctionville and Cushing to the east; Sergeant Bluff, Salix, Sloan and Whiting to the southeast; South Sioux City, Dakota City, Homer and Winnebago to the south; Jackson, Hubbard, Emerson and Thurston to the southwest; and Willis, Waterbury, Allen and Dixon to the west. Major roads serving Sioux City include: Iowa State Route 12, Iowa State Route 20, Iowa State Route 35, US Route 20, US Route 75, US Route 77, Interstate Highway 29 and Interstate Highway 129.

Sioux Gateway Airport (SUX) is a military and civil airport. Currently the only airline providing scheduled passenger flights is Northwest Airlink with direct flights to Minneapolis. The Airport is also home to the 185th Air Refueling Wing of the Iowa Air National Guard. Sioux Gateway Airport can be reached after a nine minutes drive from Sioux City.
